Rex Warren and Walking Rain

Singer-songwriter Rex Warren may have started his music career in and around his native Amarillo, but after 18 years of living in New Mexico, he’s an unabashed new-age folkie to the core. Right or wrong, that’s the impression you’re left with on the evidence of the peaceful, easy feeling that permeates his second album. The title Raise Your Voice seems a bit of a misnomer; Warren doesn’t shout his convictions so much as express them in a soothing manner befitting a front porch conversation while watching a Southwestern sunset. His lyrics and delivery are earnest but amiable, helped along by unassuming but pleasing melodies and impeccably clean acoustic picking. The four tracks featuring subtle accompaniment from Lloyd Maines and Terri Hendrix are highlights, but Warren and his band Walking Rain sound just fine on their own, too.
