It’s surprising that it took the 10th anniversary of Doug Sahm’s 1999 death to inspire a tribute album, but what matters is whether they got it right. And the answer is a definite yes. Producers Bill Bentley, David Katznelson, Stephen Brower and Doug’s son Shawn brought together just the right combination of significant others to do justice to the Tex-Mex pioneer’s still-vital songs, such as fellow Sir Douglas Quintet and/or Texas Tornados members Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyers and Jack Barber, who recorded the Tornados’ “Ta Bueno Compadre (It’s OK Friend).” Sahm’s West Side Horns and his other son, Shandon, also played on that track. That’s Ry Cooder playing guitar on “She’s About A Mover,” with his son Joachim on drums and Thee Midniters’ Little Willie G. (and his son) on vocals. Dave Alvin, Los Lobos, Freda & the Firedogs, Alejandro Escovedo, Terry Allen, Jimmie Vaughan, Charlie Sexton, the Gourds, Greg Dulli and Joe “King” Carrasco also do Doug proud, but the finale, “Mendocino,” is perhaps the album’s finest moment. It features Shawn on vocals — so ably carrying the torch that now seems officially passed from father to sons. If only Freddy Fender had been around to add a note or two. — LYNNE MARGOLIS
